Woodturning Demonstrations / Classes

I have a full day demonstration for multi-axis spindle turning.  I explain the various shapes that are produced from joining segments on multiple axes.  I stress safety in turning, and with specific concerns with multi-axis pieces.  Multiple small projects are completed with the intention of showing the process, the watch-outs, design and form.

My multi-axis class takes students through several multi-axis projects, working on tool control, process and understanding of multi-axis principles.  The class can be tailored to fit time, equipment and experience levels.

I have put on recent demonstrations and classes at regional AAW chapters:

  • Turners Anonymous (Pittsburgh, PA) - April 2024
  • Central Indiana Woodworkers (Indianapolis, IN) - September 2023
  • Ohio Valley Woodturners Guild (Cincinnati, OH):Multiple demo's and classes- 2010 to present

Multi-Axis Spindle Presentation and demo of techniques between centers

  • Duration, roughly 1.5 hours, but can be modified to fit an hour.
  • Multi-axis goblet stem intro. 2 axes
  • Presentation on multi-axis shapes. I will discuss and describe the various shapes that occur by moving the axis and joining axis with convex and concave curves.
  • Demo club and disk shapes between centers – Short demo of the shapes discussed in the presentation.
  • Cabriole leg: Practical application of multi-axis turning.
  • Twist: Multi-Axis technique for putting a twist on a spindle. Candlesticks are a practical application.
  • Handouts are provided

Multi-Axis candlestick by leaning the piece in the chuck.

  • Duration:  Approximately 1.5 hours, but can be squeezed into an hour if necessary.
  • This same technique can be used for a variety of interesting projects, such as egg stands, elevated boxes or sculptural art.
  • Step by step instructions are available under Project Plans

inside-out technique for turning fancy legs for vessels

  • Duration = Approximately 1.5 hours.
  • These legs can be used to elevate your vases, bowls or boxes.   Many different leg shapes can be produced to fit the design of your vessels.
  • The inside-out technique is also commonly used for ornaments
